Should Little Girls Pursue STEM?

In an article published in The Atlantic, researchers found that “6-year-old girls already have gendered beliefs about intelligence.”

Psychologist Lin Bian from the University of Illinois conducted a study of 240 children, aged 5 to 7, to see which adult – male or female – they thought were “smarter.” The results were significant.

Among 5-year-olds, both boys and girls associated brilliance with their own gender. However, those aged 6 to 7, only boys still stuck with that view.

As a Montessori Preschool in Virginia, we at Maple Lawn Montessori of Manassas Park believe that children, both boys and girls, should be encouraged to speak their minds and embrace their individual passions.

So, to answer the question of whether girls should pursue STEM? Absolutely! Along with whatever else she wants to experiment with.
